Berlin's gastronomic world changes and regenerates constantly. In the 1850's there were 102 "Gasthöfe" in Berlin. These mainly served as accomodations for visitors and travellers. Today there are over 11,000 restaurants, bars, lounges, takeaways, cafés, bistros, pubs and beach bars.

Berlin has a broad spectrum of German as well as international restaurants. You will find simple establishments and gourmet temples. There are numerous genuine and odd European, Oriental and North and South American restaurants. New restaurants and bars with exciting ambiences and different concepts spring up like mushrooms. The well-reputed, stylish and estabished cuisines attract customers with their star chefs, and the simple but typical kebab places (Döner Imbisse) spice up the German capitol.

The variety of restaurants in Berlin is great. The most popular gastronomic areas are around Hackesche Höfe, Kurfürstendamm, Savignyplatz, Gendarmenmarkt and Nikolaiviertel. Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg are nicer, more familiar and less commercial areas. The restaurants in these parts of town reflect the pace and the way of life of Berlin's trendy subcultures.
